She wrote that violations of the rule of law are becoming more frequent in Hungary, often with the approval of those who believe they are on the „right side.” However, Le Pen emphasized that democracy has no sides—it only has rules, which she accused the new Hungarian prime minister, supported by the European Commission, of trampling underfoot.
Her comments were a response to a post by Hungarian MEP Kinga Gál, the first vice-president of the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament. Gál, a Fidesz member, described the recent actions in Hungary as unprecedented. She reported that prosecutors, without prior notice, entered a facility storing Fidesz data to seize the party’s entire communication system and databases. According to Gál, such an event has not occurred since Hungary’s democratic transition in 1990. She argued that after failing to break Fidesz’s resistance through political means against what she calls the „Tisza government’s authoritarian rule,” the government is now using legal tools to paralyze the strongest opposition party. In a democratic state based on the rule of law, she stated, this is unacceptable.
Le Pen’s intervention highlights growing international attention on Hungary’s domestic political developments. Her critique aligns with concerns about democratic practices and the rule of law, issues that have frequently put Hungary at odds with European institutions.
